Spotlight|How Hong Kong can contribute to the development of China’s digital economy?

On May 17, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held a special consultation meeting on "promoting the sustainable and healthy development of the digital economy" in Beijing.

Wang Yang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, emphasized: "Continue to strengthen, optimize and expand the digital economy to make it better serve and integrate into the new development pattern and promote high-quality development." Liu He, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, pointed out that efforts should be made to adapt to the all-round changes brought about by the digital economy and improve comprehensive national strength and international competitiveness.

China attaches great importance to the digital economy, which is currently a major development trend in the world. The "14th Five-Year Plan" clearly proposes to build "Digital China", and the also proposes to strengthen scientific and technological innovation cooperation in the Greater Bay Area. As a major international financial center, combined with the institutional and market advantages of the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong can synergistically contribute to the development of China’s digital economy.

The Legislative Council of Hong Kong held a meeting on May 18, the import and export functional constituency member Kennedy Wong Ying-ho pointed out that Hong Kong is relatively backward in the development of the digital economy at present. The popularization and application rate is low, and the government lacks corresponding policies and supporting deployment. He suggested that the Hong Kong Government and the Mainland should strengthen cooperation to support the relevant enterprises to accelerate the development of digital economy.

The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Alfred Sit Wing-hang, also said that the Hong Kong government has disbursed electronic consumption vouchers to the public twice during the epidemic, which has popularized e-consumption to a certain extent. The digital economy is the current trend of the world's economic development, and a Digital Economy Development Committee should be established to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of digital economy in Hong Kong.

Recently, "The Chinese University of Hong Kong—Zhejiang University Joint Research Center for Digital Economy" was established, which aims to take advantage of the two universities’ advantages to promote cooperative research in the fields of artificial intelligence, platform economy, Digital Yangtze River Delta, Digital Greater Bay Area, digital transformation of enterprises, digital currency and digital governance, and jointly promote the development and innovation breakthroughs in the field of digital economy.
